Declaring that the situation of the Jews in Tunisia has become safer now than it was several months ago, but that in Morocco their situation is still serious, Irving Engel, president of the American Jewish Committee, told a press conference here today that his organization is not opposed to assisting in the emigration of Jews from North Africa, but seeks at the same time to secure equal rights for the 250,000 Moroccan Jews and their integration in Morocco on the basis of full legal equality.
Mr. Engel emphasized that the danger exists that Jewish emigration from Morocco may soon be severely restricted by the authorities. He said that one of the objects of the American Jewish Committee is to secure for Moroccan Jews the right of free movement with their belongings. He urged maximum support of the United Jewish Appeal so that more Jews who wish to emigrate from North Africa can be helped to do so.
Mr. Engel also announced that the American Jewish Committee is conducting studies in democratic European countries of Jewish community life there, especially with regard to educational, religious, cultural and communal affairs. The survey is being conducted by a team of two experts, the AJC president stated.
