Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Nissim’s office reported today the arrival of Rosh Hashanah greetings from Jewish communities of Poland, Rumania and Yugoslavia, extending wishes for Israel’s well-being and for world peace. Rosh Hashanah starts tomorrow evening.
As Israeli Jews prepared for the High Holy Days, the Egged Transport Company mobilized 1, 500 buses to transport an estimated 1, 250, 000 people over the holidays. The railways also made special arrangements to meet the anticipated rush of traffic. Except for a shortage of eggs, Israel’s food shops were well stocked and shoppers found commodities plentiful and reasonably priced.
Many groups are organizing High Holy Day services in public halls. Almost all seats in synagogues are sold out and attendance at Selichot prayers was higher than usual. Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Nissim today paid his traditional pre-holiday visits to various kibbutzim conferring with members of the settlements on various religious subjects.
