Formation of the “Associated Jewish Organizations of San Francisco,” the first Jewish community council to be established here, was announced today. The new group, which has been organized as a result of a merger of the Jewish Survey and B’nai B’rith Community Committee and the United Jewish Council, will invite all Jewish organizations in the city with at least 125 members to join.
The official statement issued by the organizing committee states that the AJOSY “will concern itself generally with promoting Jewish morale and Jewish unity throughout the community and will participate in community efforts of all faiths gained at the defense of democracy and the war effort.” The Jewish community of San Francisco dates back nearly 100 years, to the California Gold Rush of 1849.
