For the first time in two decades elections for the Jewish community council took place here this week. Elections can only be held with the permission of the Turkish authorities and until now they had not granted such permission.
The number of votes cast in the balloting was very low and communal authorities are alarmed at the lack of interest thus displayed. The council is a body which is responsible for the administration of all synagogues and other assets belonging to the Chief Rabbinate.
