A sharp controversy broke out today in the 2,500-member Madrid Jewish community over the widely-reported service in Madrid’s Catholic Church of Santa Rita in February in which Jews joined with Catholics in a special prayer.
Jo Lasry, vice-president of the community, tendered his resignation in the dispute. Elections for a new community leadership will take place on May 17 and Senor Lasry has announced he will contest the presidency with Max Mazin, who participated in the February 28 service.
