For the first time in eight years a free election for the Vienna Jewish Community Council will be held here on April 7, when the 36 members of the Council will be chosen, Jewish leaders announced today.
Electoral laws were recently changed so as to permit all Jews over 21 years of age now residing in Vienna, regardless of taxpaying status or nationality, to vote in the forthcoming elections. The electoral register of 138,000 before Hitler has been reduced to 3,700. Four groups have formed an alliance to present a united ticket in opposition to the Jewish merchants organization. The four are: the Zionist Organization, the International Committee of Transient Jews, the Hungarian Joint Committee, and the Jewish Section of the Austrian Campers Organization.
After the elections, the community council will take the lead in organizing a federation of Austrian Jewish community councils, the announcement said. The federation will include the Jewish community councils of Linz, Innsbruck, and Ischl.
