A three-day annual conference of representatives of French Jewry opened here today. The parley will elect a central consistory.
Addressing the opening session, Eugene Weill, secretary-general of the Alliance Israelite Universelle, called for the establishment of a general association of Jews living in the French union. The Alliance, he added, was qualified to assist in the organization of such a Jewish communal body.
Mr. Weill stressed the importance of the Jewish school system in France and French North Africa for the development of Judaism. He described the prominent place accorded to Hebrew studies in the Alliance school curricula.
Charles Haddad, vice-president of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Tunisia, told the meeting that some 25,000 Jews, principally in southern Tunisia, are preparing to immigrate to Israel.
