Jewish Community-owned buildings and two schools, one of which was founded by the Jewish Colonization Association 30 years ago, were destroyed this week by fire in Falticeni, Moldavia, it was reported today.
Dr. Shmuel Schwartz, chairman of the Falticeni community, declared that he believed the blaze was the work of arsonists since traces of explosives were found on the spot.
An investigation carried out under the direction of the Interior Ministry established that the fire was caused by shells left in the school courtyard during the war, and not removed despite the community’s repeated requests. The fire caused no casualties, but left six Jewish families homeless.
