The World Jewish Congress today issued a call to all its branches and affiliated organizations to observe United Nations Day tomorrow. At the same time, it addressed a proclamation to the great powers and other nations emphasizing its “deep apprehension” over the danger of a third World War.
“The World Jewish Congress,” the proclamation says, “in the name of the Jewish people which was the first and most grievous victim of the last World War, calls upon the great powers and other nations to make utmost efforts in order to arrive at a common agreement in regard to world peace and to develop effective international co-operation in accordance with the spirit of the United Nations.”
In the call to its branches, the Congress said: “The Jewish people have a vital stake in the success of the United Nations. Peace and understanding between all nations and world tolerance towards all racial and religious groups and their protection against discrimination, and the universal respect for the rights and freedoms of every human being these are the basic principles of the Charter of the United Nations, and they are also at the very roots of the existence and survival of Jewish communities dispersed as minorities throughout the world.”
