Israel’s refusal to revise its nationality law was strongly defended today by Dr. Israel Goldstein, president of the American Jewish Congress. The Congress leader, presiding at a luncheon in honor of Israel Consul-General Semah Hyman, who is returning home at the end of his tour of duty, voiced support for Prime Minister Ben Gurion’s rejection of a reported plea by a delegation of the American Jewish Committee to revise Israel’s nationality law.
Dr. Goldstein paid tribute to Mr. Hyman’s devoted service to Israel, noting that he had fought in the Jewish Legion during Allenby’s World War I Palestine campaign. On joining the Israeli foreign service in 1950, Mr. Hyman became Economic Counsellor to the Israel Embassy in Washington, and in 1951 was appointed Minister to South Africa.
