Jewish Congress Protests to Britain on Leniency to War Criminals

The World Jewish Congress today protested to the British Government against the policy of granting clemency to convicted German war criminals. A memorandum submitted by the British section of the W.J.C. to the Foreign Office stated that such a policy encouraged ultra-nationalist and anti-democratic forces in Germany. The memorandum said, in part:

“It is vital to prevent the public re-emergence of such organizations as the S.S., declared to be criminal by the International Court at Nuremberg. It is hoped that Her Majesty’s Government, with her allies, will see to it that such criminal organisations will be unable, under the pretext of welfare work, to abuse the policy of leniency towards individual war criminals by pursuing activities designed and having the effect of keeping alive and strengthening the doctrines of reaction and barbarism by virtue of which these war criminals, individual and organizational, caused misery, ruin and death to many millions of innocent people.”
