For the first time since the days of bloody strife in this country last summer, prior to Algeria’s acquisition of its independence, the Jewish Consistory met today, elected officers, and reconstituted the official Jewish community.
Dr. Henri Goslan, a veterinary who had previously served on all of the city’s slaughtering establishments, and who had stayed neutral during the seven-year France-Algerian turbulence, was chosen president.
The old Algerian Jewish community, however, is not in existence any longer. Out of about 162,000 Jews here before the struggle for Algerian Independence, less than 6,000 remain.
The Consistory adopted resolutions pledging the Jewish community’s loyalty to the new State and its fidelity to the President of the Republic. Another resolution requested all rabbis in the country to “invoke Divine benediction” on the new State.
