A new “pay as you go” program for displaced persons has been in effect since Jan. 14, U.S. Army headquarters here announced today, disclosing that Jewish and other displaced persons who do not pay for their food and lodging in DP camps will be ousted from such installations.
Under the new ruling widows, children, under 16 years of age, students and per-sons who are ill are exempt. DP’s who refuse or who are unable to pay will become ineligible to reside in the camps and will forfeit their preferred status, except as regards repatriation. They will also lose any supplemental rations to which they ? may now be entitled.
The ruling, which is in line with the official program to make all DP’s in the American sons of Austria self-sufficient, will hit hardest at Jewish refuses and political persecutees.
State and War Department spokesmen in Washington told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that they had no knowledge of any such order, but thought it might be an extension of a ruling issued last November, which specified that Jewish and other DP’s were no longer exempt from an Austrian “work order,” making it obligatory for all persons resident in the country to seek employment. They believe that the Jan. 14 deadline may have been set by local military authorities in Vienna as a step towards implementing the November order, which had not been rigorously enforced.)
