Parents of Jewish children attending Protestant schools in Montreal were urged today to make sure the children receive a systematic Jewish education in recognized afternoon Jewish schools. There are no non-sectarian public schools in Quebec, all “public” schools being operated under either Catholic or Protestant auspices.
The appeal was issued by the Canadian Jewish Congress and the Council of Jewish Educational Institutions, which reported also on a survey in the Cote St. Luc area of such Jewish education. The survey found that 69,1 per cent of Jewish children attending the Protestant sponsored schools do not attend Jewish afternoon schools. The survey was made by volunteers of the Jewish Junior Welfare League, the Temple Beth Sholom Sisterhood and the young married group of the Combined Jewish Appeal.
The statement said that four aim must be Jewish education for every Jewish child throughout elementary school age and, wherever possible, through high school age.” The Board of Jewish Ministers of Greater Montreal asked rabbis to speak on Jewish education during synagogue services and to urge their congregants to act to assure that every child receives Jewish education.
