More than 15,000 people visited the first exhibit of the Jewish Museum of Western Canada between the time it opened Oct. 9 to Dec. 31, and thousands more are expected to view the exhibit, “Journey Into Our Heritage,” by the time it closes March 31, it was reported here this week. According to David Hemphill, managing director of the Manitoba Museum where the exhibit is being held, “this is an exceptional attendance record for exhibits” in the museum. The show has been lauded by provincial and federal officials, art directors and the news media.
Dr. Stanley Haidasz, the new Federal Minister of State for Multicultural Affairs, commented that “this exhibit should be preserved.” and noted that it was “most impressive.” During a CBC national radio program last month dealing with the national museum policy of the federal government, one of the participants, Moncrief Williamson, president of the Canadian Art Museum National Directors Organization, stated: “When I was last in Manitoba, I saw a most excellent Jewish exhibition there relating the history of the Jews in Western Canada and I think this is something we will go out of our way to bring to the Maritimes (provinces), as it is something we know nothing about.”
