Jewish Funds for Justice was recognized for its efforts following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The New York-based Jewish non-profit group and the National Credit Union Foundation won the Community Impact Award, presented by the National Federation of Community Development Credit Unions at a ceremony June 8 in New Orleans. The awards recognize major donors to the federation s hurricane relief fund. Jewish Funds for Justice, with support from UJA-Federation of New York, donated $250,000. “The Jewish Funds for Justice has long been aware that the federation s community development credit unions are the contemporary analogs to the Hebrew Free Loan Societies that helped American Jews build businesses, gain education, and create prosperous lives for their families and communities more than a century ago,” said Jeffrey Dekro, the group’s senior vice president.
