A strike of all gravediggers in New York cemeteries, both Christian and Jewish, may be declared if the strike of the Calvary Cemetery gravediggers is not settled today. There are 2,000 gravediggers in Greater New York.
The gravediggers in the Calvary Cemtery demand a salary of $42 per week, instead of $5 a day, and a nine hour working day. They ask time and a half for overtime and double pay on Sunday.
James C. Hunt and Jacob Cohn, delegates of the Funeral Chauffeurs’ Union, stated that they are considering calling a strike of all funeral coach drivers in the city. Fourteen labor unions of New York and New Jersey pledged support to the Calvary Cemetery workers.
