Jewish groups are split on a New York City law recognizing same-sex marriages. Agudath Israel of America is “very disappointed” with the bill’s passage, said Rabbi Avi Shafran, the fervently Orthodox group’s director of public affairs. But Emily Grotta, a spokeswoman for the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, said the Reform movement supports civil recognition of same-sex marriages.
