President Eisenhower was commended today by the Jewish community relations agencies comprising the National Community Relations Advisory Council on his recommendations to Congress for liberalization of the Refugee Relief Act.
Writing to the President for the 33 constituent national and local agencies of the NCRAC, Bernard H. Trager, NCRAC chairman, said that Mr. Eisenhower’s recommendations were “in consonance with the great tradition of America as a sanctuary and haven and in keeping with our needs as a nation.”
The letter also expressed the hope that the President’s earlier recommendations, made in his State of the Union message last January, for correction of the discriminatory and inequitable features of the McCarran-Walter Immigration Act would be speedily acted upon. The President was urged to use the influence of his office to expedite Congressional hearings on pending bills for immigration policy revision.
The National Community Relations Advisory Council is the joint planning and coordinating body for the American Jewish Congress, Jewish Labor Committee, Jewish War Veterans, Union of American Hebrew Congregations, Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America, and the United Synagogue of America and 33 Jewish Community Councils and Jewish Community Relations Councils in all parts of the country.
