The Jewish Historical Institute of Warsaw has begun assembling material on the crimes perpetrated against the Jews by Gen. Karl Albrecht Oberg, one-time Gestapo chief in Paris. Gen. Oberg’s trial on war crimes charges opens in Paris next month.
Before going to Paris, the Gestapo leader was chief of the German police in the occupied Polish district of Radom. The Historical Institute is gathering the documentation of Gen. Oberg’s crimes in Poland at the request of the Jewish Documentation Center in Paris which has assembled much evidence for the French Government of the crimes of individuals and groups of Nazis against the Jews.
The Association of Vilna Jews in Poland has begun action aimed at bringing to trial for his crimes against the Jews a Gestapo leader named Martin Weiss, who is charged with murdering 80,000 Jews, hundreds of whom he executed personally. Weiss, who was recently arrested in the American zone of Germany, was dubbed the “bookkeeper” by survivors of the Penary concentration camp because he kept a record of the number of his victims placed in each mass grave.
