The United Hebrew Trades, a central body of Jewish Labor Unions, resolved to support the Day, a New York Jewish daily newspaper, in the present controversy which has developed between the administration of the newspaper and the New York Newspaper Guild, a CIO organization, following a strike which the Guild proclaimed.
The strike is opposed by the Jewish Writers Union which is affiliated with the United Hebrew Trades and which for many years has been operating in the field of the Jewish newspapers. It is similarly not supported by the printers, mailers and linotype-setters of the Day. On the other hand the administrative staff which is organized with the CIO has joined the striking writers who after joining the Guild were expelled from membership in the Jewish Writers Union on the ground that none can belong to two labor unions at the same time.
While the strike continues, some of the striking members of the administrative staff are reported to have returned to their work this week following the publication of statements by leading Jewish labor unions and fraternal organizations disapproving of the strike and calling for support of the Day. Among these organizations were the Workmen’s Circle and the Jewish National Labor Alliance.
