Jewish Labor Committee Issues Statement on American Jewish Conference

The executive committee of the American Jewish Conference today made public a statement issued by the Jewish Labor Committee in connection with its decision to participate in the Conference.

“Various statements,” the text reads, “have been made in the press regarding the position of the Jewish Labor Committee in connection with its participation in the Conference. Various interpretations have been made on the part of organizations and individuals, and there have been various complaints and accusations. The Jewish Labor Committee is responsible only for its own decisions and statements, in common with all other responsible organizations.

“The Jewish Labor Committee’s decision to participate in the American Jewish Conference was adopted with the expressed desire to come to the Conference as a united representation of the organized Jewish labor of America, and to make every effort to find the best solution for the present overwhelming Jewish tragedy and the best program for Jewish post-war problems. The Jewish Labor Committee will undoubtedly formulate a program which will represent the convictions of its affiliated organizations and will present its program to the American Jewish Conference.

“From the first day of its founding the Jewish Labor Committee has taken the position that it is ready to contribute its united strength to all efforts where common action promises better results. At this time when Jewish life is in the greatest danger, when the fate of the Jewish people trembles on the balance, when millions of Jews are on the brink of annihilation, the entire constructive and organized energies of the Jewish people must unite in an understanding among all shades of opinion in order to adopt a program of activity which can be carried out more effectively and productively by a united body than by a body split into opposing groups.”
