A drive for $250,000 to be raised among trade unions, thirty-five percent of which would be used for fighting anti-Semitism in the United States and the rest for the rehabilitation of Jews in Europe, was launched last night at the closing session of the first national convention of the American Jewish Labor Council.
Dr. Stephen S. Wise, addressing the conference, criticized British Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin for his refusal to admit 100,000 displaced Jews to Palestine, Dr. Wise declared: “Bevin talks like a rowdy. If the British Labor Party is what it pretends to be, it would throw Mr. Bevin out of office. He fights the Soviet Union timidly and fights us Jews courageously.” He warned that Jews in displaced persons camps in Europe would not “be patient forever.” adding: “They are going to rise up. We know they will have the American Army against them and have the miserable Nazis against them.”
