Anti-Semitism, which lately has been felt rather strongly among Soviet workers, has even reached the distant island of Sakhalin where the Jews now living there have come from Bira Bidjan. The “Zwezda,” a paper in Minsk, describes the torturing of the 20-year old Jewish boy, David Shuster, by a number of workers in Sakhalin.
According to the “Zwezda” the torture, reminiscent of the inquisition, included tearing out of handfuls of hair, driving nails into him and pouring water on the boy until he became mad. The local Communists are reported to have been aware of what was going on but nevertheless did nothing.
The incident was called to the attention of a special representative of the Communist Party from Chaborovsk, who ended the inquisition and had the guilty workers hailed into court.
