The New Jersey region of the American Jewish Congress announced here today the formation of a special panel of volunteer lawyers, through its Commission on Law and Social Action, who will work without remuneration with the leading Negro groups in this area in connection with the current campaign for civil liberties and economic rights.
Commenting on the basic purpose of the panel, Sanford Gailanter, acting chairman of the Commission, stated: “We feel, as an organization of American Jews, that the essential justice that underlies the goals being sought by Negroes must be actively supported by all those who truly believe in the American idea of democracy. ” The panel, he said, will give legal council in cases brought before the courts for actions arising out of demonstrations, and will also establish the broad legal principles on which such cases are to be argued before the courts,
