Jewish leaders and representatives of major Jewish cultural, Zionist and labor groups today attended the funeral of Joseph Opatoshu, famed Yiddish novelist, Mr. Opatoshu died last Thursday at the age of 67.
Born near Plotzk, Russia, Mr. Opatoshu came to this country in 1907, after attending school in Warsaw. He was graduated from Cooper Union as an engineer but devoted himself entirely to writing. His first work appeared in 1910. Many of his works were translated from Yiddish into English, Hebrew and other languages.
In addition to his best known work, “In Polish Woods, ” he was also the author of “Hebrew,” “The Dancer,” “A Day in Regensburg, ” and “Rabbi Akiba,” among others. He was active for many years in the work of Jewish cultural groups.
