The economic crisis in France has affected a great part of the Jewish population in the French capital.
A joint meeting of French and Russian Jewish leaders was held in the consistory to consider means of relieving the situation. Rabbi Israel Levi presided.
Reports submitted to the conference disclosed that a great number of Jewish workmen in Paris are unemployed. It was decided at the meeting to launch a relief campaign for the purpose of maintaing soup kitchens and assisting some of the immigrants to return to their native countries. A committee of ten was elected to have charge of the campaign.
The central relief committee issued an appeal to the Jewish population of Paris. The appeal states that 2,000 free meals are distributed daily among the Jewish poulation and that this requires a daily expenditure of 4,000 francs. The Jewish population is urged to help raise the necessary funds.
