More than 300 leaders of Jewish communities throughout the United States will hear from top personalities of the American Government this week-end a frank evaluation of what is needed from the civilian population to further the defense program of the United States.
The detailed picture of the relationship between the country’s defense program and the services required from American Jewry will be presented at the first National Leadership Mobilization on Community and GI Service called here by the National Jewish Welfare Board for November 3rd and 4th.
A statement issued today by Irving Edison, J.W.B. president, said: “Washington regards J.W.B.’s program of service to the Armed Forces and to Jewish Community Centers as vital to the nation’s morale and to the successful mobilization of our defense. The highest government leaders want to present the hard facts of these times, which will determine the measure of J.W.B. operations in 1952.” Mr. Edison explained that J.W.B.–the national association of Jewish Community Centers and Y,M.H.A.s–is the government-authorized agency for religious, morale and welfare services to Jewish men and women in the U.S. armed forces and in veterans hospitals.
President Truman, in a letter to Mr. Edison, hailed the Leadership Mobilization and J.W.B.’s work for the armed forces as “affording an unparalleled opportunity for public service. I am sure the National Jewish Welfare Board will rise nobly to it.” The President will receive J.W.B. leaders at the White House Monday.
