Will Palestine have a Jewish mayor? Near East and India, commenting on this question, reports:
The Arab opposition has met at Jaffa and has expelled. Dr. Hussein Khaldi from its ranks for his “presumption” in running for municipal honors in opposition to Ragheb Bey. His action has been interpreted as disloyalty, and he has also been accused of deserting the Opposition for the Mufti of Jerusalem’s party, which, of course, is inaccurate, although he enjoyed the latter party’s support, merely because he set himself up against the Mayor.
Among the Jews, interest continues to run high in the possibility of a Jew being elected to the Mayoralty. This is regarded not unfavorably among the defeated Nashashibi elements, but merely because it would rule out a Mayor belonging to the opposite party. The representative Jewish institutions, together with the six Jewish municipal councilors, have agreed now to submit a demand for a Jewish mayor, and it is expected that the issue will be taken up upon the return of the High Commissioner later this month.
