The Jewish National Home is a folly which has failed, declares Viscount Rothermere, calling for the return of the Palestine Mandate, in a signed article appearing today in the “Daily Mail,” of which he is the owner.
Three hundred million pounds have already been spent by England in mandated countries, he declares. Still, if the Labor Government should hand back the mandates in the Middle East, the national gratitude will be ten times stronger than that evoked by the negotiations at The Hague.
The Jewish people do not really want a National Home in Palestine, he says. Not the Jewish people, but only a handful of Jewish refugees from Russia and Germany, who live on subsidies, are peopling Palestine, he declares.
“Nobody has greater admiration for the Jews than I,” he writes. “If they really wanted a Jewish National Home, and if this were possible without infringing upon the rights of other races. I should have been glad to see the British Government help its realization. But the Jews have not gone back to Palestine, nor will they. To such an energetic people, the golden opportunities of the West are more attractive than Palestine. Only a handful of Jewish refugees from Russia and Germany, who live largely on subsidies of their wealthy kinsmen in America, go to Palestine,” he asserts.
