Central Jewish organizations in Argentina are now studying ways and means of transporting 1,000 Jewish refugee children from Naziheld territory to Argentina, it was reported here today by the Hias-Ica Emigration Association. Permission for them to enter has been granted by the President of the Argentine Republic.
The President’s assent was secured by large Jewish organizations in Argentina on the initiative of Edourd Oungre, director of the Hias-Ica Emigration Association who during his recent stay in Argentina, invited all Jewish communities in South America to cooperate with the Association in the work of rescuing Jewish children from Nazi-occupied lands, especially from France, the report said, In Chile, the President of the Republic promised local Jewish organizations that his government would admit refugee children as well as a certain number of refugee intellectuals, the Association reported. Argentina and Chile are the only countries in Latin America which still maintain diplomatic relations with Germany.
The children, when admitted to Argentina, would be placed by Jewish organizations in orphan homes, in private homes and in the colonies maintained by the Jewish Colonization Association. Mr. Oungre is now in Chile where he was received by the President of the Republic and the new Minister of Foreign Affairs in connection with his efforts to secure admission of Jewish refugees from Europe.
