Substantial progress in developing mental health services for Jews in European and Moslem countries was reported here at the annual meeting of the Standing Conference of Jewish Organizations.
The meeting was held under the chairmanship of Dr. Barnett Stross, president of the OSE in Britain, who cited as an example the Jewish mental hospital in Amersfoort, Holland which will be officially opened in November and which will consider receiving Jewish patients from all parts of Europe.
The meeting brought together 12 doctors and 12 Jewish lay leaders active in community health services in eight countries, including OSE representatives in Britain, Rome, France, Italy, Morocco, and Tunisia. Also represented were the Jewish Mental Health Association of Holland, the Health Department of the Joint Distribution Committee in Geneva and doctors of a hospital in Iran.
With the exception of Britain, the OSE units are all operational and provided medical services last year to an estimated 83,000 women and children through a network of mother-child clinics and adult dispensaries.
