THE RUMANIAN JEWISH PARTY FAILED TO RECEIVE A SINGLE SEAT IN YESTERDAY’S NATIONAL ELECTIONS FOR A NEW CHAMBER OF DEPUTIES, INCOMPLETE RESULTS TODAY INDICATED.
WITH MANY JEWISH VOTERS INTIMIDATED BY THREATS OF ANTI-SEMITIC NEWSPAPERS FROM GOING TO THE POLLS, THE JEWISH PARTY COULD NOT OBTAIN THE MINIMUM OF TWO PER CENT OF THE VOTES NECESSARY FOR REPRESENTATION IN THE CHAMBER. IT CONTESTED 50 OF 71 CONSTITUENCIES.
PREMIER GEORG TATARESCU’S LIBERAL PARTY WAS LEADING, WITH 37 PER CENT OF THE VOTES. THE NATIONAL PEASANTS HAD 24 PER CENT. THE “ALL FOR THE FATHERLAND” PARTY — THE ANTI-SEMITIC IRON GUARD — OBTAINED THE SURPRISINGLY LARGE PROPORTION OF 21 PER CENT, AND THE NATIONAL CHRISTIAN PARTY, HEADED BY PROF. ALEXANDER CUZA AND OCTAVIUS GOGA, 9 PER CENT.
UNDER RUMANIAN ELECTORAL LAWS, A PARTY RECEIVING MORE THAN 40 PER CENT OF THE VOTES CAST IN A PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION AUTOMATICALLY IS AWARDED 50 PER CENT OF THE SEATS IN THE CHAMBER, THE REST BEING DIVIDED AMONG ALL THE PARTIES IN PROPORTION TO THE NUMBER OF VOTES THEY RECEIVE.
