Representatives of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and of the Jewish Colonization Association here received frantic appeals today for immediate relief action for the Jewish population in Eastern Galicia affected by the flood.
The heavy rains caused the rivers in that region to overflow, bringing colossal damage to houses, fields and stock. Many towns and villages were affected by the flood, including the estates of the Baron de Hirsch foundation. Four thousand square miles were covered by the water in the districts of Lemberg and Przemysl. Rail communication, telephone and telegraph were interrupted.
The government has allotted several million Zlotys to aid the victims. The towns of Stryj and Stanislawow were especially affeced. About 150 lives were said to have been lost. Twelve thousand people remained roofless.
