One-third of the total population of this important port town is said to be Jewish. The heavy increase during the past two years is due to the shortage of dwellings and high rents in Tel Aviv, according to an estimate preceding a census of the Jaffa Jewish inhabitants taken for the purpose of the forthcoming municipal corporation elections.
The Jewish community of Jaffa and Tel Aviv has decided to hold a census to ascertain the number of eligible voters. At least three members on the municipal council are to be asked by the Jewish community, and two additional Jewish representatives on the electoral committee which will conduct the polling.
