Chief Rabbi J. H. Hertz’s prayers were used with slight adaptations in Westminster Abbey, Dean Paul Delabillere revealed today in a letter expressing thanks for Dr. Hertz’s message of sympathy on the bombing of Westminster.
Dr. Herts’s letter disclosed that the 250-year-old Great Synagogue on Duke’s Place had been completely destroyed in a recent raid. The Central Synagogue was also destroyed.
Synagogues recently damaged include the Borough, Dalston, Hackney, East London, New West End, Bethnal Green Philpott Streat and Sidney Street. Meny commercial buildings in the Hounds Ditch and Osborne Street areas were destroyed.
The pianist Myra Hess is created Dene Commander of the Order of the British Empire in King George’s birthday honors list. Miss Hess has won widespread admiration for the National Gallery concerts she has been conducting since the beginning of the war, which were moved into an underground shelter when the most severe stage of the Blitzkrieg started.
Meanwhile, the Daily Mail reports that farmers on the Isle of Man have shown hostility to Mosley Fascists arriving for internment. Though their need for extra labor is great, the fanners’ dislike of the hundreds of Fascists who are now detained in the island is greater. When the Fascists have appeared on the streets they have been booed by onlookers.
“We look upon these men as traitors to the Empire,” one of the farmers is reported to have said. “I would rather work till I drop than have one of them about my land.
