The number of Jewish children attending the Protestant schools in Greater Montreal rose by the end of last April to a peak of 18,469, and formed a majority of all students in 23 of the 105 schools in the area, the Canadian Jewish Congress reported here today.
Louis Rosenberg, research director for the CJC, who compiled the statistical study, said there were 77 Jewish children in the area’s Protestant schools in 1877, constituting 2.3 percent of the total enrollment in those schools. By April 30, 1964, the ratio of Jewish student enrollment had risen to 26.2 percent.
In addition, Mr. Rosenberg pointed out, about 4,000 Jewish children in the Greater Montreal area received their secular and Jewish education in 1964 in various Jewish community and congregational day schools. These, he noted, are maintained without any financial assistance from municipal and provincial tax funds.
