Jewish refugee children reaching Sweden, Spain or Portugal from Nazi-held or Nazi-dominated countries will be admitted into England in accordance with a decision of the Home Office made public here today. The decision supplements the standing order to admit Jewish refugee children from France.
Following the announcement, Jewish relief organizations here issued a call to Jews in Britain to submit applications for visas for children from Germany, Austria and other Nazi-occupied countries new living in neutral countries.
Pointing out that “effective action can still save millions of people” from Nazi annihilation, Lord Vansittrat, former diplomatic adviser to the Government, addressing the House of Lords today made a renewed appeal to the British Government “to take effective steps which would halt the systematic extermination of people in occupied countries before it has gone beyond repair.” He complained that the radio broadcasts from London to Germany have encouraged the Germans not to take seriously the warning of the Allied Nations about postwar retribution for the murder of innocent civilians,
The Bishop of Chichester, speaking in the House of Lords, stated that for ten years the Gestapo has been torturing and killing innocent victims. He called for punishment against these “assassins and gangsters.” Lord Selborne, Minister for Economic Warfare, replying for the Government, assured the peers that all Germans responsible for atrocities against civilians in occupied countries will be treated with the utmost severity.
