Concerted efforts to secure the landing in Brazil of the 86 German-Jewish refugees who have been ordered shipped back to Europe by the Argentine authorities were made today as the “tragedy steamer” Cabo des Hornos which is carrying these refugees back to Spain reached Rio de Janeiro this afternoon on her way from Argentina.
The Brazilian Government was asked to permit the debarkation of the refugees on Brazilian soil for transit to Paraguay which is willing to admit them for permanent residence. It was doubted, however, whether the Brazilian authorities will grant such a permit. Interested organizations are also conducting negotiations with British authorities to permit the landing of the refugees in Trinidad.
