A group of 31 Jewish refugees from Poland who were stranded in Rangoon, capital of Burma, succeeded in escaping to India prior to the Japanese occupation of Rangoon and have reached Bombay, according to advices received here today by Dr. Ignacy Schwartzbart, Jewish member of the Polish National Council. The number of Jews in Rangoon who fell into the hands of the Japanese is estimated to be about 1,500, nearly all of them natives.
At today’s session of the Polish National Council, Dr. Schwartzbart made an interpellation regarding the omission from the official text of Premier Sikorski’s speech, opening the Council, of the reference to the loyalty of the national minorities in occupied Poland. In his address, the Polish Premier stated that the loyalty of the Jews will not be forgotten, but this section of his speech was not included in the official Polish releases.
