The Turkish Parliament has passed a hill giving religious minority communities in the country autonomy over their own religious, cultural and charitable institutions. The bill was introduced a number of months ago by Salomon Adatto, a Jewish deputy.
Under the former system of administering the minority communities, a central government agency was responsible for them and the minorities were not permitted freedom of administration of communal property.During the debate in Parliament on the measure, Mr. Adatto charged that the old system of administration “paralyzed” the communal institutions.
After the measure was approved in Parliament, the Jewish and Greek deputies rose to thank their colleagues in behalf of their respective communities.
