The body of Egon Roth, Zionist leader who organized Jewish partisan resistance in Slovakia and who was killed during the Slovak insurrection in 1944, was buried today at Banska-Bystrica with full military honors. The body was exhumed from a mass grave.
To commemorate the occasion, the Jewish Partisans Union has erected a memorial to all Jews who died in the resistance struggle. Representatives of the Czechoslovak Army, government and local officials, a representative of the Palestine Jewish community and officials of various Jewish organizations attended the ceremony.
A Czechoslovak Government mission left today for Vienna to question Siegfried Zeidel, a former commander of the Theresienstadt camp, who is now under sentence of death for anti-Jewish crimes. The execution has been stayed to permit the Czechs, who earlier requested Zeidel’s extradition to stand trial for similar crimes, to question the condemned man about incidents which occurred during his administration of the concentration camp. A representative of the Council of Jewish Communities of Bohemia and Moravia will participate in the commission’s work. It is expected that sentence will be carried out on Zeidel as soon as the commission has completed its inquiry.
