The role which Jews of America have played in the economic and cultural development of the United States was recalled here today in a resolution adopted at a gathering of leaders of Jewish national organizations and more than 100 leading New York rabbis, marking the 450th anniversary of the discovery of America.
“We are grateful not only for the physical and spiritual beans which the New World has afforded, but also for our opportunities to make worthwhile contributions to the growth of America, ” the resolution said. “At this here milestone, when every religious and racial group gladly recalls its part in the making of America, we of American Israel recall our part in America’s growth, economically, cultural, and spiritually, as well as in its defense against threats of aggression and conquest.” The gathering was arranged by the Synagogue Council of America in the synagogue of the Spanish and Portuguese Congregation Shearith Israel, the oldest Jewish congregation in America.
