The annual “Hebrew Month, ” a period traditionally observed during the four weeks between Purim and Passover, went into full effect today in Jewish schools throughout the United States and Canada, with many thousands of classrooms furnished with special materials to help observe “Hebrew Month. “
The observance is conducted annually under the auspices of Histadruth Ivrith of America to emphasize the values of Hebrew culture, Hebrew as the language of the Bible and prayers, the language spoken in Israel and the link among Jewish communities throughout the world.
This year’s “Hebrew Month” observance is built around the life and works of the late Rabbi Abraham Isaac Hacohen Kook, first chief rabbi of modern Palestine. In past years, the observance featured the contributions toward Hebrew culture by the late Dr. Theodor Herzl, founder of political Zionism; Eleazer Ben-Yehudah, father of modern Hebrew; and Rabbi Israel Baal-Shem-Tov, founder of the Chassidic movement.
