The American scientist who directed this week-end the successful launching into orbit of the latest United States “instrument package,” Pioneer V, now orbiting around the sun, is Dr. Abe Silverstein, 51, son of Joseph and Eva Lecine Silverstein, of Terre Haute, Ind,, it was revealed yesterday.
Born at Terre Haute, Dr. Silverstein received his early scientific training at Rose Polytechnic Institute, in his home city. He entered the service of one of the laboratories of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics in 1952, and has risen steadily to his present post as director of space flight programs for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
