Moslem nationalist mobs wrecked and burned a number of Jewish-owned stalls in the old medina (native quarter) market here yesterday as fighting between the nationalists and French police and troops continued into the second week. The Moslems believe that the Jews are collaborating with the French.
The situation remains confused in this city where more than 100 persons have already lost their lives and where the police forces make their way through the Moslem quarters in battle dress and in frontline patrol fashion. It is impossible at this time to assess Jewish losses in either lives and property, although few Jews are believed to be among the casualties. However, a number of Jewish merchants have been ruined by the sacking and destruction of their property.
A ten year old Jewish boy, Georges Dahan, was one of six persons killed here when a powerful bomb exploded at Casablanca Square. In addition, 35 persons were injured in the explosion. This incident led to reprisals by Frenchmen and further nationalist attacks.
Meanwhile, the World Jewish Congress has opened an office here, headed by David Azoulai as executive secretary. The decision to open the office was made by the WJC executive and the Moroccan Central Committee of the Congress.
