Jewish Telegraphic Agency Praised in Scientific Study by Dr. Arthur Ruppin: Says J.t.a. Made It Easi

The important role which the Jewish Telegraphic Agency plays in broadcasting Jewish news throughout the world is pointed cut by Dr. Arthur Ruppin in a two-volume work under the title of “Sociology of the Jews”, which has appeared here this week, published by the Juedischer Verlag in Berlin.

In devoting a special chapter to the Jewish press, Dr. Ruppin in his valuable work emphasises that the Jewish press is highly instrumental in strengthening the international bond and interests among Jews in all parts of the world.

“The Jewish Telegraphic Agency, which was established just after the war and which maintains a service in every important country in the world, providing the press with reports on events of a Jewish nature, has made it easier for the Jewish newspapers to report on Jewish affairs”, Dr. Ruppin declares.

If not for the supply to one Jewish community of news regarding the activities of other Jewish communities, it would have been impossible to maintain inner contact among the Jewish people under present circumstances, when the Jews are spread throughout many countries, Dr. Ruppin continues. This mission is being carried out by the Jewish press. The general press, naturally, can only devote a limited space to reporting Jewish affairs. It reports news of Jewish interest only from time to time, and in an unsystematic manner. The Jewish press, however, makes all possible efforts to report all events of the Jewish community in the land in which it is published, and also of the Jewish communities in other countries. It also takes up a definite attitude towards Jewish questions in other countries and takes up the interests, where they are in danger, of Jews in other countries.

500 JEWISH PERIODICALS NOW PUBLISHED THROUGHOUT WORLD: 300 OF THEM IN YIDDISH: LARGEST CENTRES FOR JEWISH PRESS ARE POLAND AMERICA AND PALESTINE.

There are now over 500 Jewish periodicals being published throughout the world, according to statistics in Dr. Ruppin’s book. 300 of these are published in Yiddish, 70 in Hebrew, and the rest in various other languages. The largest centres where the Jewish press appears are in Poland, the United States and Palestine. In Poland there are 171 periodicals in Yiddish and 24 in Hebrew. In the United States there are 65 periodicals in English, 41 in Yiddish, 3 in Hebrew, and 2 in Spanish, including 8 dailies, 68 weeklies, and 18 monthlies. In Palestine there are 58 periodicals, of which 29 are in Hebrew. They include 4 daily newspapers in Hebrew and one in English.

3,477 Jewish publications have appeared in different countries since between 1667 and 1920, Dr. Ruppin reveals in his book. Of this number 217 were daily newspapers and 1,083 were weeklies.
