Jewish unity against the anti-Semitic policy of the government of Dr. Kurt Schuschnigg seemed assured today, when it was announced that the Zionist majority had united with the Austro-Jewish union to form a united front in opposition to the government.
The two groups will share the offices in the Vienna Jewish community. Parity of Zionist and non-Zionist groups on the important political committees of the Jewish community is one of the conditions on which the united Jewish front was organized.
Austrian Jewry has been greatly aroused by the segregation of Jewish children in special ghetto schools, by continual and increasing dismissal of Jewish workers in industry and the government services and also by continual incitement against the Jews. Even the children of Jews converted to Christianity were segregated in the all-Jewish schools. The government made it clear that it intended to set up a sharp distinction between “Aryans” and “non-Aryans” in the most approved Nazi fashion.
The Austrian press has made every effort to split Jewish opposition to the government measures. The Reichspost, official government organ, triumphantly printed an announcement from the Agudath Israel, ultra – orthodox Jewish group, praising the government for creating the separate Jewish schools.
