Jewish Veteras Elect Harris; 5th Column Denounced

The 45th annual encampment of the Jewish War Veterans of the United States closed last night with the election of Frederick S. Harris Meriden Conn. as commander succeeding Edgar H. Burman New York. Mrs. Jennie G. Silverman, Chelsea, Mass. was elected president of the Ladies Auxiliary.

At a patriotic service held aboard the U.S.S. Constitution–“Old Ironsides”–at the Charlestown Navy Yard Governor William H.Vanderbilt of Rhode Island declared it was high time that “we took off the kid gloves of diplomacy in dealing with Trojan horses and fifth columnists.”

“We do not want war ” he said “but at the same time we are determined to protect our way of life, our form of government our freedom of speech and press our right to worship according to the dictates of our conscience.”

In a scathing denunciation of Old World prejudices and hates that “are seeping into the western hemisphere and into our own United States” Senator David I. Walsh of Massach-usettes, chairman of the Senate Naval Affairs Committee declared that “these are times when all real Americans must do calm and dispassionate thinking to preserve America and ints institutions.”

Messages from President Roosevelt and Wendell I. Willkie Republican nominee for the presidency, urged the Jews to continue their patriotic service.
