Jewish and Roman Catholic groups are participating as observers at a conference here of the National Council of Churches, a Protestant group, which is studying the question of how much religion may be introduced into public school classrooms without teaching the beliefs of any particular faith.
Rabbi Arthur Gilbert, of the B’nai B’rith Anti-Defamation League, told the conference that the ADL “would not oppose the study of plans for teaching about religion as a curriculum subject in the public schools. It draws a sharp distinction, however, between teaching religion as an instrument of indoctrination and the teaching of facts about religion in order to provide information.”
